Weymouth & Portland is well known as a seaside, holiday area although also boast a long and distinguished maritime history.

This combination makes Weymouth and the famous surrounding Jurassic coastline one of the very best boating areas in the UK.

The maritime history goes as far back as 1588, when English ships sailed from Weymouth & Portland to meet the Spanish Armada, through to the Second World War when Weymouth featured prominently in the participation of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

More recently Weymouth & Portland hosted many events, including the start of the Tall Ships Race on three separate occasions

Once again Weymouth and Portland will be making history as it hosts the sailing activities during the 2012 Olympic Games.

This global event will mean a huge boost to the area including the development of an amazing Marina complex in Portland harbour.
